  • Installing MySQL using Yum

# yum -y install mysql*

Start the Apache httpd service and make it start automatically on every reboot
# /etc/init.d/mysqld start
or
# service mysqld start
# chkconfig mysqld on
Make sure Apache’s Web service is accessible through a browser]

Test
# mysql

  • Installing MySQL from Source Code

-> Download the MySQL package
# cd /usr/src/
# wget http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/mysql/Downloads/MySQL-5.1/mysql-5.1.34.tar.gz

-> Verify the MD5 checksum
After you have downloaded a MySQL package, you should make sure that its MD5 checksum matches the one provided on the MySQL download pages.

Verify it using md5sum command
# md5sum mysql-5.1.34.tar.gz
42493187729677cf8f77faeeebd5b3c2 mysql-5.1.34.tar.gz

-> Extract the downloaded package
# tar xvfz mysql-5.1.34.tar.gz
# cd mysql-5.1.34

-> Configure MySQL Source
# ./configure –prefix=/usr/local/mysql

–prefix specifies the location where to install MySQL

-> Compiling the source
# make

-> Installing MySQL
# make install
This will install MySQL Database software to —PREFIX directory.
